Watford Lodge at New Mills has been subjected to significant improvement over the last year following a disappoining decline in its fishing qualities. This subject is covered in other parts of this website but we believe the decline was due to predation by goosanders and possible the odd cormorant. More protection has now been afforded by the introduction of rafts and pondside weed along with a significant renewal of fishing stock. The following pictures show participants in the first match (April 2009)held on Watford Lodge since the improvements.
This is Dick Ward, a regular attender and contributor at the monthly meeting of the club. Normally a talkative and friendly septugenarian but this evening is the first to settle in the Match. Here quite and showing intense concentration which perhaps conributed to his winning the match with 13lb 2oz.
This is Stuart Wilson, club secretary who with the help of his wife Amanda. conducts the club's negoiations with water authorities, local councils and the environment agency, notwithstanding the work involved in maintaining a membership of around 500.Stuart was second in the competition with 10ib.
The fourth peg is occupied by Anthony Perry, not a member at the moment but most of these matches are open and visitors are welcome. This picture also affords a view of the banks of the Lodge and you can see how the path has been cleared, the following week it was covered in wood chip
