Dovecotes and the River Goyt

[Disley Image]

Dovecote is our newest water and is a similar size to Disley Dam,the water depth varies from 3 to 8 feet. The site is located on the left hand side of Station Road going towards Strines Station and is characterised by a large dovecote which is located on an island in the middle of the water.
The waters used to belong to Tootal, a textile company which was taken over by Coats in the 1980's. In recent years the site has been run as a day ticket business by the Strines Residents Consortium but will be rented by DNMAC effective from 1 May 2008.
This site is atractive in view of its size and accessibility, access from the roadside is good, there is a certain amount of cover and probably sufficient bank space to provide twenty pegs. The site is also within 1/4 mile of Strines Station which is on the Manchester(Piccadilly)-Sheffield line, giving access for those without transport from Reddish, Hyde, Chinley, New Mills. The direction to this site by road is the same as that described for our Strines section of the River Goyt. Entrance to the water is through a gate which is locked and key has to be obtained from the Post Office located on the road through Strines, the Post Office is closed on a Wednesday.A key is also available from Smithy Tackle in Whaley Bridge. A £5.00 deposit is required for this key. The site is still open for non-members at the charge of £5.00 a day. Parking is after the bridge on the left, recently there have been a number of cars from local workers parked there but at weekend there is plenty of room to park. Be careful when you park on the road that you leave enough room for heavy lorries and tractors to pass

This water contains roach, tench, perch, bream and carp

We have also obtained the rights to the section of River Goyt flowing from the Strines bridge towards Marple for about half a mile. This stretch of water seems to me not for the faint hearted as it isolated, requiring care and planning initially. Entrance is from the New Mills side of the bridge, which you need to walk under and then wade down the river. Entrance from the banks for the first 400 yards is not possible because it is walled to a height of fifteen to twenty feet but the river is accessible from the bank on the right hand side after 400 yards. There is a footpath along here but I suggest careful reconnaissance before you go with your tackle. You would be advised to make yourself familiar with this side as it appears as the other side is being prepared for houses. There is a bend in the river after about 450 yards where the water seems deep and promising, particularly for fly-fishing.Parking is the same as for Dovecotes
